A Full Year As An Ella Baché Student - Words By Michelle Lamborne

With the year passing in the blink of an eye I look back and reminisce on the first day I stood nervously in the courtyard outside the Ella Baché College, working up the nerve to head inside to embark on a new journey filled with limitless opportunities.

With the year passing in the blink of an eye I look back and reminisce on the first day I stood nervously in the courtyard outside the Ella Baché College, working up the nerve to head inside to embark on a new journey filled with limitless opportunities.

I can clearly remember the nerves I had that day and the questions running through my head, am I making the right decision? Will I like it here? Will I make friends? And most importantly what should I have for lunch?

Once I had calmed my nerves I made way into the college. Day one was a whirlwind full of meeting new people, making new friends, understanding what was to come throughout the year, finding our way around the college and of course... a fire drill. The day seemed to go as quickly as it started and before I knew it, it was time to pack up and head home for the day. With friends and family calling to see how my first day was I apologise, I was so excited that I spent hours describing each and every second of that day; I loved it and couldn’t wait to go back. This is a feeling that remained with me day in and day out.

Settling into college life was a breeze and I even started to understand some of those daunting words that I heard therapists use on orientation day, the students as a whole had a feeling of ‘yes we can do this’.

That was until, lesson 1 of skin biology. I can only imagine the looks on our faces while we were trying to comprehend the different layers of the skin. Looking back on that day I can clearly remember thinking to myself, the only way I will ever remember all this new information would be to start using it daily. Yes there was a week where I could be heard saying “oh my stratum corneum is desquamating”. Over the next few months the nerves settled down, skin biology became less daunting and fellow students were overheard saying “I got this” before heading into assessments, before we knew it our first semester was over!

Semester two our knowledge and confidence grew, the business studies assessments allowed us all to imagine a future of potentially owning our own beauty salon, some students even beginning their work experience.

It was then I began to learn about the nurturing family business Ella Baché had created, training therapists and inspiring them to achieve whatever beauty aspirations they dream of. Thriving on innovation, forward thinking and creativity the company vision resonated within me “knowledge that creates results that last”, education is at the heart of their philosophy.

Semester three introduced advanced subjects and electives built upon the knowledge we had gained throughout the year. Along with applying knowledge, passion and hard work those advanced subjects weren’t so daunting after all; we had a great support system that worked with us until the very end. The most exciting part about our last semester, we were all given the chance to practice our skills on clients in our student salon. Day one saw all students collectively freak out together at the same time, but as time passed yet again so did our nerves- nailing that perfect spray tan wasn’t so hard after all! Before we knew it, the semester was coming to an end and the dream of becoming a beauty therapist was within arm’s reach, all in the blink of an eye.

*Michelle Lamborne was chosen by her peers as student representative for the graduates of 2015. During the graduation ceremony last year, she received the Edith Hallas award, the most coveted award within the college. She was winner of the Small Business Award, showing true potential as a future salon owner.
