Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Laser and IPL?

Most people use the terms interchangeably, but what is the actual difference between Laser and IPL?

Lasers emit coherent, single-wavelength (monochromatic) light. IPL emits non-coherent broad-spectrum light filtered to bands. Laser targets a specific chromophore whereas IPL uses broader bands that target chromophores less selectively.

Lasers are typically used for large areas of hair reduction, and precise pulses for tattoo removal and ablative/non-ablative skin resurfacing.

For broad aesthetic/photo rejuvenation and hair reduction in lighter skin types, IPL is the most cost effective for skin clinics. Portable devices with integrated cooling systems and features to select specific skin concerns have become safer and more popular.

What will I learn with the additional IPL units in my Diploma of Beauty?

THEORY

Learning the theory of the skin and its response to light-based treatments mean that trained therapists will be able to adapt to the different types of equipment found in the workplace.

You will learn the theory behind light-based treatments. Terms like phototypes, fluence and pulse duration. You will understand how light treatments work on the skin, and contraindications such as recent tanning, photosensitising medication and pregnancy. This includes treatments like Light Emitting Diode (LED) treatments, Laser and IPL.

You will learn about the skin’s response to light-based treatments.

You will understand the legislation and regulations around the safe use of light-based treatments, and your responsibilities as a beauty therapist performing light-based treatments.

You will learn how to design IPL treatments to address skin concerns. You will learn how IPL is used to permanently reduce hair growth.

PRACTICAL

You will learn how to use IPL to safely treat skin conditions and reduce hair growth on the face and body.

You will be always supervised by a qualified trainer, in small class sizes.

What will I be able to do with this certification?

You will be able to use your Diploma of Beauty Therapy to work in NSW skin care clinics such as Ella Baché Salons or dermal clinics where you will be able to confidently perform beauty skin treatments including those offering using light-based treatments.

Other states and territories may have additional requirements to perform IPL skin treatments. For example, in Tasmania, QLD and WA you will need to have a laser safety certification.

Do I need to have a Laser Safety Certification to do the training?

In NSW at this time, you do not.

Why is Ella Baché including these IPL subjects in the Diploma of Beauty?

Ella Baché has always taken a “skin-first” approach to product innovation and client care. Ella Baché College was one of the first RTOs approved to deliver the Graduate Certificate in IPL and Laser Hair Reduction in 2016. Since then, the industry has widely embraced these advanced modalities. TheSHB60221 Advanced Diploma of Beauty Therapy was released in 2021, including IPL and laser electives.

Because Ella Baché Salons include IPL in their menu, it makes sense to include it in the Diploma of Beauty Therapy for our on-campus cohorts.

The term “dermal skin therapist” generally refers to a beauty therapist with additional qualifications in the use of various devices and their effects on the skin. Only medical professionals can use medical grade equipment in skin care treatments; however beauty salons, skin clinics and Medi-spas now make up a large portion of the beauty and skin care industry.

The inclusion of these two units will make you more employable in your chosen beauty career.
