College Alumni, 5 Minutes With Meredith Schaerf

Ella Baché HQ chats with Meredith Schaerf Dermal Therapies Executive of Ella Baché College on her most memorable days at the college, what she looks for in a student, daily inspirations and why Ella Baché College of Beauty Therapy remains above the rest.

What do you do to prepare yourself for the first day of College?

The first day of college can be quite nerve racking to be honest, though I have conducted many orientation days it can still be an anxious day for all. The adrenalin is high and I am always conscious that the students feel comfortable knowing that they have made the right decision to study with us at Ella Baché. I always try to put myself in the student’s shoes and remember my first day at college and how I was feeling, being able to understand this and relate it to back to the student is so important. Some students may have not studied for years, are completely changing career, or leaving their small children for the first time, so being able to talk and relate to these scenarios hopefully allows the students to feel more relaxed on the first day of college.

Why choose Ella Bache College?

Ella Baché is the only beauty therapy college in Australia attached to a leading skin care brand, this offering so much more than just achieving a Diploma of Beauty Therapy.  Once you step foot in the college you become a part of the Ella Baché brand and family as a broader network. We work extremely hard behind the scenes for real outcomes, which means jobs and career opportunities for our students.

What inspires you?

People, their journeys and life experiences are most inspirational for me. We all have a story, a background, and learning about the sacrifices students make to take up studying is truly amazing. I am constantly impressed by those people who have a family, or those whom English is not their first language. So many dedicate their time to studies and juggle competing demands, all whilst ensuring their work is of high quality and that they are presented professionally – there are so many examples of success and overcoming adversity, and that’s something we see every day in the college.

What are your favourite moments throughout the year?

Watching the students achieve personal growth and transition into professionals. Seeing the students chase their dreams is so inspiring, whether it is a complete career change or a student straight from High School following their passion to succeed in the Beauty Industry.

One of the absolute highlights for me is graduation, seeing the students and families together, knowing how much hard work sacrifice and effort it has taken for everyone to attend that evening. To help celebrate with the students and their loved ones is truly a really special moment.

What makes a stand out student?

Someone who has passion, dedication, enthusiasm and is hard working.

What does the Edith Hallas Award mean to you?

The Edith Hallas Award means a great deal to me, it represents someone who is passionate not only about the beauty industry, but also cares deeply about all facets of the skin and its health, just as Edith Hallas did. Understanding and applying knowledge of the body as a whole, and being able to make decisions and design effective treatment plans to alleviate symptoms and conditions, is so important for a professional skin therapist. The award recipient demonstrates passion for continual learning, dedication and continual learning and growing their knowledge, these therapists truly immerse themselves in education, by seeing, touching and experiencing all these is to learn about skin.

Have you ever found yourself as the student guinea pig in the salon? If so, what are your favourite treatments?

Yes, unfortunately not as often as I would like! The obvious favourite treatment is a facial; it is always such a treat and very relaxing. I really like to be able to see how the girls have progressed in their skills, and experience the unique technique that all therapists posses.

Most memorable moments to you at the College?

Pamper day would have to be one of the most memorable and favourite moment of all. Seeing the women being treated to a relaxing day away from the rigours of their medical routine by our students was a delight. Giving something back to these women who have been suffering with their health, and providing them with an element of control over their experience is an absolute honor. It is also a privilege to see the students conduct themselves so professionally while providing high quality treatments.
