Workplace Communication for the Beauty Therapist
Gain the knowledge and necessary skill to effectively communicate and relate to a diverse range of clientele and staff in the workplace as well as effectively prepare and present written and oral presentations.
Health and Safety in the Workplace; Microbiology and Infection Control
Understand the National Occupational Health and Safety and Worksafe Australia guidelines, covering the competencies necessary to maintain a safe, secure and hygienic workplace for staff, clients and others in the beauty salon. Gain the knowledge and skills to identify diseases and know how to refer clients to a General Practitioner if required and to apply all relevant health regulations and standards in the salon.
Professional Ethics and Practice
Gain the knowledge of how to conduct yourself ethically and responsibly as a professional beauty therapist by understanding and applying a Code of Practice.
Nutrition
With awareness of wellness in our culture this module reinforces and strengthens our commitment to a holistic approach to health and well being for ourselves and for our clients. Gain the knowledge to apply the principles of nutrition in the diagnosis of skin conditions and skin problems and the methods of remedying these problems in facial and body treatments.
Anatomy and Physiology of the Body
Gain the knowledge and skills to identify and describe the fundamental and scientific principles of anatomy and physiology and the relationship between structure and function. You’ll learn to describe and indicate the characteristics of the chemical organelles, cellular tissues, organs and organ systems. You’ll also be able to relate the effectiveness of beauty therapy treatments to the normal functioning of human cells, tissues and organs and well as learn how to recognise and advise clients on anatomical and/or physiological abnormalities.
Anatomy and Physiology of the Skin
Gain the knowledge and skills to identify and describe the general anatomy and physiology of the skin and its accessory structures. Understand and describe the mechanisms of skin growth and repair. Assess the condition of the skin recognising normal variants in skin conditions and any abnormalities and infections that may be present. Understand the effects of beauty treatments on the skin.
Electricity in Beauty Therapy
Gain the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively operate electrical equipment in the salon and to utilise electrical currents and fields in beauty treatments.
Cosmetic Chemistry
Learn the knowledge and skills to identify and describe the chemical composition of products and treatments used in beauty therapy and understand the effects on the body.
Small Business Operations and Management
This module gives you an edge, which will assist you in opening, in the future, your own business. It teaches you how to be part of a team and become a valuable member of the business and provides the knowledge and skills to implement small business management and operations in the beauty salon. Practical knowledge is gained from beauty therapists, industry managers and salon owners, including the theory of their roles and responsibilities, organisational structure and how to function effectively, both individually and as a team.
Temporary Epilation
Learn how to recommend and perform temporary hair removal, hot and strip waxing techniques and bleaching treatments covering all areas of the face and body, in accordance with industry and occupational health and safety standards.
Body Treatments
Learn how to recommend and perform body massage and other body treatments (including body exfoliation, self-tanning and spa treatments) on clients, incorporating the use of specialised techniques and/or products and equipment.
Manicare and Pedicare
Learn how to recommend and perform manicare and pedicare treatments in accordance with industry and occupational health and safety standards and within set time limits. Gain the knowledge and skills to effectively perform a variety of treatments.
Facial Treatments
Learn how to correctly diagnose different skin conditions and prescribe correct facial treatments and products. Provides knowledge and skills to recommend and perform facial treatments on clients incorporating the use of specialised techniques and/or products and specialised equipment.
Make-up for the Beauty Therapist
Learn how to recommend and perform make-up services suitable for a variety of clients within set time limits, with reference to professional ethics and occupational health and safety requirements. You will be able to perform day, evening, glamour and bridal make-up to complement the latest trends and fashion.
Salon Service
Gain the opportunity to practise and refine acquired beauty therapy skills and to apply knowledge gained throughout the course. Includes performing Beauty Therapy consultations, treatments, hygiene duties, sales and other workplace functions, in a simulated salon environment in accordance with industry, professional and occupational health and safety standards.
Salon Sales, Retailing and Merchandising
Gain the knowledge and skills required to sell and merchandise retail goods and services in a beauty salon, and learn how to set and meet sales targets.
Commercial Service
Gain the opportunity to practise and refine acquired Beauty Therapy skills and to apply knowledge gained throughout the course, while working under supervision, in a salon environment. Includes performing beauty therapy consultations, treatments, hygiene duties, sales and other workplace functions, in a simulated salon environment, in accordance with industry, professional and occupational health and safety standards. This subject also gives you added valuable confidence to ensure good employment hopes and the ability to impress employers at job interviews.
Aesthetic Aromatic Massage
Learn how to recommend and perform basic aesthetic aromatic massage treatments in accordance with strict professional and occupational health and safety standards. Includes client consultation and selecting and blending essential oils.
Permanent Epilation
Gain the knowledge and skills to perform accurate and permanent hair epilation, in accordance to the latest Occupational Health and Safety standards.
Ear Piercing
Gain the knowledge and skills to perform correct ear piercing techniques, while observing safe working practices and health and hygiene regulations.
Beauty Therapy Skin Thesis
Gain the opportunity to research in a specialised area relevant to the profession of beauty therapy. The completed research may be submitted as a requirement for membership to various beauty therapy professional associations such as:
APAA: The Association of Professional Aestheticians of Australia. Australia’s premier professional beauty association. This association aims to establish and promote the integrity of the professional Beauty Therapist by initiating programs to maintain and progressively raise the standards of the industry to world class through the active participation of its members.
ITEC: The International Therapy Examination Council. This is the United Kingdom’s leading awarding body for professional qualifications in Beauty therapy, Complementary therapy and Sports therapy. ITEC qualifications are considered to be the highest available world-wide and provide diploma and certificate holders with the best possible opportunities for employment in their fields both in Australia and around the world. Their qualifications are recognised internationally and programs are delivered by registered colleges in 25 countries worldwide.
Ella Baché Product School
Discover the fundamental Ella Baché approach to professional skincare, which includes knowledge of all products and how to apply them in a solution to help achieve the best skin possible. Understand how the ingredients within each product work and how they are used effectively on the skin.
External Product Schools
These visits to other brands will help you gain the knowledge and skills in the appropriate selection and use of cosmetics/beauty therapy products and associated techniques, as instructed by education representatives of major cosmetic product manufacturers in the industry. This will also give you a better, broader understanding of skin care products to enhance your prospects for employment and expands your knowledge of other skin care ranges. Other guest speakers will be interpolated into the course programme to expose you to the latest trends in the beauty industry.
Excursions
There will be a number of excursions away from the College campus each year. These will include external product schools, salon and department store visits, laboratory/ manufacturing distribution centre visits and State Library tour. Where appropriate the students will be accompanied by 1-2 College educators.
