SHB50115 DIPLOMA OF BEAUTY THERAPY
This qualification is for those who wish to be or are employed as beauty therapists in beauty salons, cosmetic clinics, medi-spas and day spas, to provide consultation with clients to provide beauty advice, recommend beauty treatments and services, and sell retail skin-care and cosmetic products. In this qualification you will learn how to provide a broad range of beauty therapy treatments and services including:
- Facial treatments
- Body massage and treatments
- Hair removal
- Lash and brow treatments
- Nail and make-up services
- Electrolysis and Diathermy

VET STUDENT LOANS
The SHB50115 Diploma of Beauty Therapy is a VET Student Loans approved course. A loan cap of $10,000 is available to eligible applicants to assist with Tuition Fees. DURATION AND STUDY LOAD
On-Campus (Artarmon, Sydney)
- Duration: approximately 13 months,
- Study Load: 3 x 15-week Trimesters with a 2-week break between each Trimester.
- 60 hours of Student Salon plus 150 hours of Work Experience
- Duration: approximately 15 months
- Study Load: 3 x 18-week Trimesters with a 2-week break between each Trimester
- Up to 126 hours of practical training and assessment per Trimester
- 150 hours of Work Experience
In addition to the 2-week break between Trimesters, the College will closed for an 8-week break from 23 December 2017 to 27 February 2018. Most students who are enrolled at this time will be on Study Leave for this period.
The attendance requirements for On-Campus (Artarmon, Sydney) students is 3 days per week, between 9:00am and 4:45pm. On-Campus students must attend a minimum of 80% of all classes. The attendance requirements for EdFlex™ students is to remain active in the learning portal and attend regular Practical Training and Assessment LABS.
All Students are expected to complete 150 hours of external work experience in a commercial salon whilst they are undertaking their studies. Work experience is a vital component of the qualification and a requirement to be issued the Ella Baché SHB50115 Diploma of Beauty Therapy.
Work experience will be generally undertaken concurrently with study during Trimesters 2 and 3 for On-Campus and EdFlex™students. Flexibility is offered dependent on each student’s location, situation and access to a commercial salon. Students will be assisted, as far as is reasonably practical, to find a work placement in one of the College’s partner salons, however there are no guarantees of successful placement.
If students are already working in a salon, they will need to seek advice from College trainers as to the suitability of salons, spas and other commercial enterprises for completion of their work experience placement.
PRACTICAL TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT LABS – EdFlex™ STUDENTS
We recommend EdFlex™ Students participate in at least 126 hours of Practical Training and Assessment each 18-week Trimester to ensure competence. The 126 hours of Practical Training may be comprised of any combination of the below 6 options:
- Supervised Training (only) on-campus at the 1-day Training LABS
- Practical Assessment (only) at Student Salon
- Supervised training in the student’s workplace or during their 150 hours of work experience
- Unsupervised practice at home on family and friends
- Attendance at the 5-day Intensive Practical Training and Assessment LABS
- Attendance in the On-Campus classes (Sydney only)
EdFlex students that select the 5-day Intensive Training and Assessment Labs as their primary practical training and assessment opportunity will not achieve the minimum 126 hours of Practical Training each Trimester. These students must attend any of the five other options provided above to make-up their practical hours.
COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
There are no academic entry requirements into this qualification.
General entry requirements:
All applicants into this qualification will need:
- Their own personal computer with stable internet and general office software such as; Word; PDF reader; and presentation applications such as PowerPoint.
- The physical capability to perform the role of a beauty therapist including the ability to stand for lengthy periods of time.
Equipment and facilities:
Equipment and facilities used for practical training, applications and assessments will be provided by the College. All students are required to wear the Ella Baché student uniform when On-Campus and participating in Practical Workshops Off-Campus. 1 Uniform set will be provided to each Student after the first Census Date. Any additional uniform items will need to be purchased by each student.
Students must agree to have beauty therapy treatments practiced on themselves by other students as part of both their training and assessment.
Models for LABS
Students may be required to source a model for the 1-day LABS & 5 Day Intensive LABS depending on numbers that are registered for each LABS. The purpose of bringing a model is to ensure time efficiency of practice and assessments treatments and will only benefit the student learning and experience within each treatment.
Qualification requirements and Delivery Schedule
Successful completion of the SHB50115 Diploma of Beauty Therapy, will provide graduates with 25 units of competency - 13 core units and 12 electives (comprised of 8 mandatory electives and 4 set elective units from one of two specialisation streams). With our Diploma, you will have a broad range of career options and opportunities within the industry, from salon management, to working in salons, day spas, health retreats, hotels, resorts and cruise liners. Careers in sales, marketing and training roles are also areas to consider. Many graduates will go on to open their own businesses. Ella Baché College has had an articulation pathway agreement with Victoria University since 2009. This academic pathway opportunity provides graduates of the SHB50115 Diploma of Beauty Therapy, who complete the Electrolysis/Diathermy elective stream, to receive 8 subjects of credit, which is equivalent to the first year of the 4-year Bachelor of Health Science (Dermal Therapies) degree.
Graduates of the Diploma who meet the University entry requirements will be offered a place and can enter the program at the start of the second year. The Dermal Therapies degree at Victoria University can be attempted and completed online from the second year onwards.
